Leaders in Close Finish

Leaders Mersham Sports recorded their fourth straight win in the Kent Womens Club T20 competition but were involved in a nail biting finish against Canterbury last Friday.

With the last Mersham pair at the crease, a wide drew the scores level and then No.11 Lisa Webb hit the fifth ball of the final over to point and scampered through for the winning run and a two wicket victory.

Batting first, Canterbury struggled against tight Mersham bowling. Although only losing 3 wickets – a run out and one each for Kerry Morris (1-9) and Sam Saunders (1-10) – they were restricted to 89 in their 20 overs.

Mersham Sports slumped to 25-4 in reply, with Eleanor Todd (3-11) causing most damage. The Mersham recovery was led by Katie Jordan who retired not out 30 and whose 57 run partnership with Lauren Uttley (29) took the hosts to 82.

Canterbury fought back, taking 3 quick wickets for only one run, leaving Mersham needing 7 to win from the last over. Uttley hit the first ball for 4 and was then run out attempting a second run. It was then down to Webb to see Mersham home.
